In "Out of Gas" we see Zoë's initial reaction to Wash in a flashback, in which she tells Mal, "I don't like him.just something about him bothers me" - maybe it was his disturbing moustache? Īlthough Zoë and Wash worked a very dangerous sort of lifestyle, they managed to retain a rather happy marriage. Later, Zoë married Serenity's pilot Hoban "Wash" Washburne less than a year after he joined the crew, though she did not immediately like him when she met him. After the war, Zoë joined up with the Dust Devils, a "terrorist" organization which continued to fight against the now Peacekeepers of the Alliance.Īfter the war and her stint as a Dust Devil, Zoë joined Mal aboard Serenity, though she was skeptical of his plan at first, telling him the ship was a "death trap." The two found themselves hunted by the Unificators. Regardless, Zoë followed all orders from Mal, although often with a degree of advice or concern. Mal often thought with his heart, while Zoë usually thought with her head. Unlike Mal, Zoë was career military (meaning she worked in the military as her permanent job), and was often more calm in dangerous situations. Not long after, the Alliance decided they did not want any further conflict with the "Browncoats" and finally freed the war camp prisoners. After the war, she and Mal were left for two weeks in the aftermath of Serenity Valley before being placed into camps for war crimes. Along with Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds, she was the only other survivor of their platoon in the seven week long battle. She fought on the side of Independence in the Unification War, a part of the 57th Overlanders Brigade. At the time of the Battle of Serenity Valley, Zoë had attained the rank of Corporal. Nothing else is known about her upbringing. For River, her intense intuition is what gives her powers, but as we see, such a skill can also be quite damaging when not properly managed.Zoë was born Vesselside (meaning "aboard a spaceship") on February 15th, 2484. Being psychic makes her lack of emotional control all the more damaging since she can now feel and sense everything. In the case of River, it prevents her from being able to control any of her emotions at all. While they were experimenting on her, the Alliance doctors removed her amygdala, which is the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions like fear. They often find themselves trapped between fantasy and reality, and are the most likely of the signs to get lost in their own head.įor River, these Piscean qualities manifest themselves quite clearly in her behavior. Pisces are known as dreamers, and are often said to be both extremely childlike and very mature at the same time. Within the zodiac, water signs are said to most likely to have psychic abilities, and the most cerebral and intuitive of all the water signs is the Pisces, which applies to all those born between February 19 and March 20. As air signs, Aquarians are more cerebral than emotional, which certainly aligns with Book's penchant for quoting scripture instead of revealing who he truly is inside. The most Aquarian thing about Book is this apparent contradiction –- he appears passionate about advising others and doing good deeds, but at the same time has separated himself from the world as a result of his sins. Following the war, Book became a shepherd, which he had been for 10 years by the time he boarded Serenity.īook often acts as a spiritual advisor to the crew of Serenity, quoting the Bible and providing a voice of reason. As part of an undercover operation, he joined the Alliance and violently moved up their ranks until he was involved in a campaign that killed thousands. Formerly an accomplished thief, Book was recruited by the Independence Movement many years prior and became a spy. When we first meet Book, he claims to be a Christian shepherd –- which is true –- but his history is much more complicated.
